"Names/Nombres" Journal & Notes

Use this Google Doc for all notes and journal entries while reading "Names/Nombres" by Julia Alvarez.

Answer these Journal Prompts before turning your journal in for grading:

Julia Alvarez had a complicated relationship with her name. For the most part, it didn’t bother her to have so many different names and pronunciations, but it still had an effect on her identity.

1. Have you ever stopped to really think about your name? What do you think your name tells others about you? (before they know the real you)

2. Were you named after anyone?

3. Do you have any complicated feelings about your name?

Open up Names/Nombres to answer the rest of the questions, using the TEXT as evidence (each answer should refer to a specific paragraph number)

4. What happens almost immediately when the Alvarez family arrives in New York? Explain.

5. How does Julia feel about the pronunciation of her last name at the immigration office? Use details to support your answer.

6. Describe two different ways Julia’s name affects her life at school (with teachers or with friends). Use quotes to support your answer.

Analysis.
When Julia Alvarez was asked where she finds ideas for her stories, she said “I think, when I write, I write out of who I am and the questions I need to figure out. A lot of what I have worked through has to do with coming to this country and losing a homeland and a culture.”

7. How might Julia Alvarez’s experiences influenced her to become a writer?
