Mrs. Stevenson's English 9/11

Hello Cougars!

I am so excited to be at Caldwell this year! I have taught for 15 years--at Vallivue, Nampa, and a couple of charter schools. I absolutely love teaching teenagers because I think you have amazing ideas and thoughts, so I want to  teach you how to communicate them. I try very hard to make learning but but also rigorous. I have high expectations, but I will help you be successful.

This is my 15th year teaching. I attended Boise State University to earn a Bachelor of Arts in English Teaching. I also attended the College of Idaho where I received a Masters degree in Curriculum and Instruction with a minor in English as a New Language.

Course Information
The course content focuses on reading, writing, listening, speaking, and observing. Students will read literary and informational materials, write in various formats, orally present information, research topics, and critique work. This year we will be focusing time on rhetoric and analyzing (or close reading) various non-fiction and fiction texts and speeches. Students who master the course content will be prepared for the next level English requirement and further study in the real world. Juniors focus on a survey of American Literature. Freshmen focus on short stories, grammar, Romeo and Juliet, and the writing process.

Instructional Philosophy
Students will be engaged in a variety of rigorous assignments and projects that will enhance their literacy skills, They will be held to high expectations regarding their quality of work and personal behavior. Students may be asked to redo assignments that do not meet the standards. Students ALWAYS have the opportunity to redo any assignments to improve their scores. Both reading and writing will be consistent components of this course. Students will be expected to work individually and in groups. Classroom participation is an expectation.

All classroom material will be available in Google Classroom (links coming soon!)
